Awards for Civic Excellence

The Awards for Civic Excellence (ACE) program grants stipends to University of Virginia undergraduate students who have successfully obtained internships in politics and civic life, including the offices of elected officials, political campaigns, voter registration efforts, and civic-related community outreach.

We define the essential components of politics and civic life as follows:

- Civic and Political Engagement: The direct observation of, influence on, and participation in the political process, specifically as related to political campaigns and elections, political movements, and governing and policy-making arenas.

- Civic and Political Knowledge: The intellectual capacity to observe and comprehend the mechanics of government and the political process in America, and in particular those skills and facts central to political campaigns and elections, political movements, and governing and policy-making arenas.

- Civic and Political Attitudes, Virtues, and Values: The standards fundamental to participation in civic life, politics, and government.

The ACE selection committee strives to ensure a representative balance among political parties and ideologies. University of Virginia academic credit will not be granted through the ACE program, and students, not the Center for Politics, are responsible for researching and securing individual internship placements. All awards are distributed as resources are available and at the discretion of the ACE selection committee. For more information, please contact Bruce Vlk, Deputy Director of Programs, at (434) 243-3540 or bvlk@virginia.edu.

Funding for the ACE program is made possible by a generous contribution from Larry J. Sabato, Director of the Center for Politics.
