An Immersive Learning Experience

Internships at the Center for Politics focus on two specific programs,  PLAP 3370 and the 22nd Century Scholars Summer Internship Program.

PLAP 3370

UVA students have the opportunity each spring and fall to apply to be a part of the Center for Politics’ PLAP 3370 class. This class focuses on the fundamental principals of modern American politics and government through seminars, firsthand experience with projects, programs, and research conducted by the Center for Politics. By combining seminars and topical reading/writing assignments with event participation and work experience, students become more familiar with important fundamentals of state and national politics and how these inform and are applied with contemporary political practices. In addition to class attendance, a minimum of four hours per week interning at the Center and Center-sponsored events is a requirement of the class. Students interested in applying to be a part of PLAP 3370 should click here to learn more.

Twenty-Second Century Scholars Summer Internship Program

Founded in 2020 in response to the loss of countless paid summer internships due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the UVA Center for Politics in association with other democracy-facing units of the University of Virginia, established the 22nd Century Scholars Summer Internship Program.  Through the generosity of private donors, the Center for Politics continues to provide rising second, third, and fourth-year students at UVA public-sector work experiences in event planning, political and historical research, fundraising, international engagement, and more. Scholars also receive career counseling provided by the UVA Career Center.

Since 2021, the 22nd Century Scholars Summer Internship Program has been united in varying degrees with the U.S. Department of State’s Iraqi Young Leaders Exchange Program.  The Center for Politics hosts the 6-day orientation of this exchange on the Grounds of the University before the Iraqis divide into groups and depart for other locations in the United States. During the 2024 program, the 22nd Century Scholars assisted exchange staff, lodged, ate meals, and engaged with the Iraqis throughout the exchange orientation.

In 2025, eight UVA undergraduate students will be selected to participate in the 22nd Century Scholars Summer Internship Program which takes place July 5-August 1 and November 21. Scholars receive a $1,000 stipend.  Click here for more information and to apply. The application deadline is April 20th, 2025.

G. Richard Fletcher Twenty-Second Century Scholars Stipend

The G. Richard Fletcher 22nd Century Scholars Stipend supports two rising second-, third-, or fourth-year students working an internship in the fields of environmental policy, economics, political science, political history or foreign affairs, with a preference for students interested in Latin America and United States policy toward Latin America. The $2,500 stipend is meant to support the students’ need for housing, transportation, food and/or clothing expenses to maximize their internship experience.

The Fund is named in memory of G. Richard “Dick” Fletcher (COL ’72).
